Does Intake Of Metoprolol Cause Low Blood Pressure?

I take Metoprolol after bypass surgery (March 2016). It has resulted in a lower blood pressure (92/60) than my old normal of 122/70. On two occasions recently I became very intoxicated after one drink (large gin martini). Does this medication or the resultant lower bp create a situation where distilled liquor is absorbed differently into the body?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

We usually do not recommend to use alcoholic drinks while on antihypertensive medications, especially if blood pressure is as this low.
There are great chances for getting intoxicated as you already did.

As alcohol can dilate the blood vessels, it will aggravate hypotension.

So, you can understand how risky that is.

All the best.
