Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Recently I was diagnosed with a retinal hemorrhage caused by using the valsalva maneuver. I am a powerlifter and was lifting heavy weights when I saw bright spots of light and my vision became blurry. My doctor says the bleed was relatively minor and should heal on its own but he recommended that I do no more lifting until it heals but also suggested I quit altogether because this could recur. Obviously this news is devastating to me, as powerlifting is a major aspect of my life. I do not have diabetes or high blood pressure, which I understand are risk factors. My question is: if I rest properly and allow this rupture to heal, can I return to lifting heavy again? Does having one retinal hemorrhage increase my risk of more? Will it be safe for me to lift again?
As per my clinical experience, the retinal hemorrhage is concerned with raised intra occular pressure through hypertension (uncontrolled) leading to malignant level causing end organ damage in this fashion.
The weight lifting is not of direct concern, though indirectly it can pause a bit threat in adding intra-ocular pressure particularly during the acts of over head weight lifting particularly putting the cerebral venous sinuses under tremendous pressure load.
It is strongly recommended to consult your physician or cardiologist in this regard before starting weight lifting again.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
