Does Shingles Cause Double Vision And Drooping Eyelid?

My husband has just had a blood test to see if this disease is the cause of his double vision and drooping eye lid. He had shingles in Nov. and has had the double vision since that time. The drooping eye lid has just recently occurred. I was just trying to find out more about this disease. Could the shingles cause this condition? The shingles were in his scalp, forward and down by his right eye. The right eye has the drooping lid. We have not received the results of the blood test.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
I really appreciate your concern for your husband's illness.

I have read the problems described in your query, the features outlined are suggestive of Herpes Zoster (Shingles) ophthalmicus (eye involvement).
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus occurs when the varicella-zoster virus is reactivated in the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve causing blurring of vision, drooping of the eye lid, corneal ulcer, visual impairment, etc.

I advice you to take your husband to ophthalmic specialist for the treatment which may involve the use of either topical (drop) or oral antiviral medication.
Intravenous medication may be necessary to prevent the visual impairment that might occur due to involvement of cornea.

The anti viral drugs like Acyclovir or Famciclovir shorten the duration and severity of the infection and possibly reduce the odds of a recurrence.

Hope the suggestions given above could be useful in getting him treated as early as possible.

A feed back is highly appreciated.
