Hello:
If you have the epilepsy diagnosis, you should continue your treatment. Epilepsy is characterized by seizures. They can present any time, intermittently. Causes are diverse and include traumatic
brain injury, infections,
stroke, tumors, metabolic and gentic. Sometimes the cause cannot be identified and the diagnosis of
idiopathic epilepsy is given. Even when
anxiety and stress are not a cause of epilepsy, they can trigger seizures in a patient with the diagnosis.
The treatment helps to normalize the brain function, trying to stop the anomalous discharges in the brain and therefore the seizures. Depending on the cause of epilepsy is the time the patient needs to take medications, sometimes is a lifetime treatment.
We do not use the word "Cured" for epilepsy, as I said there are some causes that cannot be cured (e.g. genetics,
brain trauma). Now we use the word "Resolved" for a patient who has ten years in a row without any kind of seizures (the last five years without taking any medication).
In your case, I suggest to re-start the treatment, avoid alcohol,
sleep deprivation, fasting, flashing lights and, if possible, stressful situations. By now, do not drive (the risk of having a seizure while driving is high). You should wait at least 6 months under treatment and without any kind of seizure to drive again.
If you can, look for your
neurologist and let him/her know what happened. If the seizure is the same kind you had before, maybe you will not need any other special test. If the seizure was different, you might need a new head CT or MRI and a new electroencephalogram.
I hope this helps. If you have any doubt before your appointment, please let me know.
