Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Sudden Rapid Pulse Rate Warrant Urgent Medical Attention?
My resting heart rate is 116. I have checked my heart rate 2 other times today and at 2pm it was 105, at 9:45pm it was 114, now at 12am it is at 116. I can feel my heart thumping hard and fast in my chest which is not normal for me as well as feeling a little dizzy, but not extremely dizzy. I am typically between 52-65bpm as I check my bpm on average 3x daily. I am concerned because as I have already stated this is not normal for me. Is this ok or should I be worried about a heart attack or any other immediate health concerns?
The normal range for the heart rate is 60 to 100 bpm. IN persons who are physical active or fit, it maybe lower than 60 because the heart is working efficiently.
If this elevation continues then you would need to be assessed by your doctor. If you do not have any additional symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, diaphoresis (excess sweating), then though you need to be seen as soon as possible, it does not need to be immediately.
Your doctor will likely examine you and suggest an ECG (to take a look at the heart rate and rhythm), blood tests (complete blood count and thyroid function tests). Anemia and high thyroid hormones can cause increased heart rate, this is the reason for the blood tests.
I hope this helps
