Does Taking Bactrium Affect The Birth Control Pill?

I am 17 years old, and I weigh 94 pounds and I am in good health. I have been on Loestrin 24 fe for almost two whole months. Today I was put on Bactrim DS for a UTI and I was told to take the medicine for three days. Does the Bactrim affect the birth control, and if so, for how long after should I use a back-up method?

Hello,

You are on birth control pills and are suffering from UTI, presently you are prescribed Bactrim for 3 days. The efficacy of the contraceptive pills are the best when taken regularly without missing a dose. Ideally Bactrim should not affect the efficacy but in case you are feeling nauseous or take the CP delayed or vomit because of the nauseous effect of Bactrim then the efficacy of the CP can be affected.

It is better to use an additional method of contraception during short-term antibiotic use, just to be safe. Take care of your hygiene, do not use public washrooms. Get your partner also tested for UTI, get his urinalysis (C/S and R/E) done to prevent recurrent infection. Take adequate amount of water and fluids. Stay away from addictions, like smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc., for the best efficacy of the CP.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
