Does Taking Effexor Help Lose Weight?

i was taking Zoloft and Wellbutrin to help combat menopausal anxiety and sweats. I gained 35 lbs even while traveling a great deal and going to the gym regularly. I am now on Effexor XR and I don t seem to be as hungry, but will I continue to lose weight on the Effexor or is this just a temporary thing. I was on the W & Z for 5 years, and on the Effexor for less than a month. Thx

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Effexor XR contains 'venlafaxine' as its ingredient and is extended-release capsule. It is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).
It is used to treat depression, anxiety, panic attacks and social anxiety disorder.
Weight gain was reported as an infrequent side effect in about 1 percent of patients taking Effexor XR.
Although it is not a drug used particularly for weight reduction, weight loss is more commonly seen in patients taking this medication.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
