Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does taking macrobid as a preventative for recurrent UTI s in a young female child, interfere with urinary cultures taken after being on the drug? My daughter has severe symptoms of another UTI, yet they said the culture didn t show infection. However, they did state that her urine looked and smelled horrible and had characteristics of infection candy
Ideally blood and urine cultures should be taken before starting any antibiotics. Taking Macrobid can affect the culture reports. The antibiotic should be stopped for 5 days and the cultures repeated. She should also get a ultrasound abdomen done to rule out any structural causes for urinary tract infection. If the urine is smelling uniquely then her urine should be tested for other problems like aminoacidurias.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
