Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
The fact that you have had a
kidney transplant itself is not necessarily harmful for pregnancy given proper care, but unfortunately some of the medications you need to take are.
Prograf is safe, but Irbestartan and any Statin for cholesterol are not safe while pregnant.
You should discuss your pregnancy with your transplant doctor if you plan to keep it as you will need to be changed to a different blood pressure medicine as soon as possible, and please stop your cholesterol medicine. It helps your overall health but all pregnant women have
high cholesterol because it is necessary for the baby's brain development and it is Ok to miss it for the duration of your pregnancy.
Oxycodone is actually one of the safest meds you are taking... Other than
withdrawal symptoms at birth for the baby if you regularly take high doses, there is really no risk, and obstetricians prescribe these drugs for pregnant women with severe pain all the time.
However, with
renal disease and
hypertension you have a very high-risk pregnancy. You will need to be seen by a high-risk obstetrician to optimize your care, and i suggest you do so as soon as you find out the fetus is viable. But even before that I suggest you let your
nephrologist know because you really need to be changed to a different medication for your blood pressure as soon as possible. You are at risk for growth problems with the fetus and preeclampsia, which will need to be monitored with frequent ultrasounds and blood tests.
So in summary, your blood pressure medicine, which is in a class called an
ACE inhibitor, can cause birth defects and is the most dangerous medication you are on and it will need to be changed. Your cholesterol medicine is harmful too but it is safe to stop that on your own. And I advise you to schedule a consultation with a perinatologist and plan to deliver in a facility that has the ability to care for high risk pregnancies.
I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. I wish you the best of luck going forward with your pregnancy.
Take care, Dr. Brown
