Does The Menstrual Cycle Re-stabilize Every Ten Years?

I ve been having, I guess, a paranoia about being pregnant. I had unprotected sex in late February. In March, I had light spotting and I definitely thought I was having implantation bleeding. I called the medical center that I m with, and got a call back suggesting to take a pregnancy test every week until I got a positive, or a period. My period came a about a week late, and the response from the medical center after letting them know was that it was nothing to worry about. I haven t had any strong symptoms that typically connect to pregnancy, but I m afraid of being that person that finds out by the third trimester. Although, I ve heard that periods can reset , or change in abnormal ways, every ten years. If that s an actual thing, then it makes sense for my situation with the spotting, since I started my first period at age 11 during the Spring time, and now I m 21. I took a pregnancy test around March 14, and another one a week later. Both were clearly negative. My periods seem to have been shorter than I remember- instead being about 6-7 days, they ve been 5-6 days. I bought pregnancy tests two weeks ago, thinking that my last two tests might have been taken too early for an accurate reading. I used them the same day- all three tests. I drank enough tea to feel like I only had a slight urge to use the bathroom, and used all three with the same urine sample. All of them came negative again. Today is the latest possible day (day 35) that I should be getting my period. All I got at first was dark brown stringy mucus, and the rest has been very light brown coloring. Also, I ve just stopped to take a look at my abdominal size, and I seem larger in the stomach area! I have been training more for a half-marathon, but maybe my diet is throwing off my results. If I were to be pregnant, I would be at around 15 weeks. So my questions are: - is it possible that periods re-stabilize every ten years? - did I make a lot of wrong moves on how to go about my last three pregnancy tests? (Such as drinking fluid and using one sample for all?) - should I be getting help for my issue, or is brown mucus more common than I think? - am I likely pregnant (should I get a blood test or ultrasound) or am I just fat! Hah. Thanks.

Hi,

Pregnancy tests are reliable enough that once a month should be OK. What I don’t understand is why your period happens to be somewhat non-regular. Therefore I recommend to see a gynecologist to find out if there’s something wrong with your hormone status. At the same time it’s very important that you worry less and focus on your studies and your daily life.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
