Dog Jumped On Baby. Concerned About Internal Damage

I have a 4 month old baby, he was laying on a baby chair/bed on the floor next to the couch. in an effort to chase the cat, my 30lb dog suddenly jumped off the couch and landed on the baby's belly, then pushed off quickly and landed I the floor. I am concerned about the possibility of internal bleeding/organ damage/ect. The baby cried for less than a minute, and the on call pediatrician said since I was able to console him relatively quickly, that he's probably fine, but I can't help but be concerned about it. Should I worry?

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

It is difficult to conclude at times.../ It is not necessary to have internal injury by the incidence
If there was some injury, the child cannot be easily pacified / even so, it will start again, from pain...
Pale appearance, fast pulse, cold extremities should draw attention to bleeding...
Nothing to do - except watch carefully for a couple of days.../ any change from the routine, consult you doctor...

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

HI,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

It is difficult to say if there is internal organ damage or bleed without a physical examination.

But generally baby will not be easily consolable if there is such a injury. If there is internal bleeding features of shock like cold peripheries, pale baby with decreasing activity, poor feeding etc would develop. But to be sure one should get a proper examination done.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

For me there are two concerns here :

1. Physical injuries due to jumping of the dog on child belly both externally and internally.

2. If there are external injuries like scratching with dog legs and vaccination status of the dog for
rabies.

Observe the child for any development of vomitings or distention of belly, or any painful tender points in the abdomen. And if you find any abnormality consult the emergency department.

Coming to second issue, if there are any scratchings on infant belly caused by the dog, check the vaccination status of the dog for rabies.

If it the dog is up to date for rabies vaccination, nothing to worry and observe the dog for 10 days.

And child can be considered giving rabies vaccination if there is scratching if the dog is not vaccinated appropriately or any abnormality noted in the dog health after 10 days from the incident.

And physical examination by a Pediatrician is important to look for any internal organ damage as the child is too small to indicate any symptoms of concern.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Hi
Welcome to HCM

Incase of internal damage or bleeding or trauma there is very rapid progression of symptoms and sign. The abdomen contains peritoneum which if contaminated with blood or any other contents from the viscera will cause peritonitis which is an emergency condition and cause shock. As you baby just cried for a minute and is now asymptomatic so there is nothing serious but still if you are so worried you can have an ultrasound of the abdomen but that will be useless.

Thanks
Regards
