Dull Ache In Upper Right Arm, Feeling Of Crack In Right Finger. Reason?

For 3 weeks, I noticed a dull ache in my upper right arm (between the shoulder and elbow ). It becomes more painful when I raise my arm, extend to the side or reach around the back. I have limited extension to the back, i.e. hard to clasp my bra. Most of the time, I do not feel the ache but sometimes when asleep, it will wake me up. Went to my PCP who thought it was strained muscles from increased computer use. Wonder if it is related to my neck crackling that has also started. Ring finger on my right hand also feels like I need to crack it.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.

From description it seems due to cervical strain or cervical spondylitis.

I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the cervical spine under his/her guidance to look for arthritis or other changes in your spine.

Your doctor after diagnosing the condition may refer you for physical therapy. The physical therapist will help you reduce your pain using stretches. The therapist will show you how to do exercises that make your neck muscles stronger.

You can take analgesic and muscle relaxant after discussing with your doctor.

You also need some life style modification like-

Do not sit for prolonged period of time in stressful postures
Do not lift heavy weights on head or back
Do turn to one side while getting up from lying down
Do the exercises prescribed regularly
Do use firm mattress, thin pillow or butterfly shaped pillow

Wishing you good health...
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
