Echo Shows Mildly Dilated Atrium. Meaning? How Can Damage Be Minimised?
I just had an Echo done and the report reads A transthoracic echocardiogram had shown normal left ventricular cavity dimensions and wall thickness with good overall wall function and no obvious regional wall motion abnormalities at rest. The left atrium was mildly dilated. There are no valular lesions. What does mildly dilated left atrium mean and what can I do to minimise damage and if possible, to repair the situation? I am 74 years of age and of Indian origin.
Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
Your Echocardiography report is normal except mild dilatation of Left Atrium, please note this could be due to just Obesity if it is there or heart condition called Atrial Fibrillation.
It must be correlated clinically as if there is Hypertension,IHD,Diabetes or any other heart disease if nothing is there and it is only positive finding it may not be of any clinical significance and even trans thoracic measurement has some limitation of accuracy.
It can be done with modern 3-4 dimensional Echocardiography with volume measurement.
Please consult your Cardiologist in this regard .
Take care
Good Luck.
