Experiencing Fever, Achy Type Pain And Chest Congestion. Caused By Morphine Suf Er?

Dr,
My husband has taken 2 doses of Morphine Suf ER 30 mg, to be taken 1 tab every 12 hrs. He now has a fever (99+), achey type pain and significant chest congestion. He thinks it's the Morph., I disagree and think he should take his next dose and treat his symptoms with aspirin and Musinex extra strength for the congestion. What do you think I should do for him?
Thank You,
Pati

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

The symptoms of your husband might not be due to the dose of morphine he took, but might be due to a co-incidental infection of the upper/lower respiratory tract infection as could be known by the history of significant chest congestion and fever. In this case , one has to be careful while taking morphine, which itself might cause respiratory depression and more of infection and less oxygenation to the body. Therefore, the morphine dose is either to be stopped for the time being, or your family physician could be consulted on this.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
