Fainting For No Reason. Assuming It Is Due To Low Iron. What Is The Iron Supplements Content To Be Taken Per Day?

My daughter, who is 20 years old right now, seems to pass out once in a while. Sometimes it has been when she has gotten shots. But at times it seems to be for no reason at all. It has happen at least two times in the last year. But has happen a few times before that. Could it be that she is low in iron? Wondering if she should take iron supplements and if so, how much per day? She is pretty tiny. She weighs 106 lbs and id 4' 11" tall. Thank you for your time!!

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.

Before I am able to give a complete answer to your question, I will need to know a few things so I can guide you in the right direction.

1. What is she doing with every episode of fainting?
2. Does she faint when she is doing exercise or any exertional physical activity?
3. Just before her fainting, what does she feel exactly, does she have any symptoms of heart beating fast or sweating or nausea or dizziness or uneasiness. Or has she fainted suddenly without having any prior symptoms?
4. Does she complain of frequent headaches.
5. Has her fainting spells associated with excessive heat/when she is out in the sun or if she has not eaten for long duration.
6. Has she been trying to lose weight recently or she has always been underweight.

Most common reason of fainting at this age is vasovagal syncope due to inability of our bodies to compensate for the inadequate blood flow back to the brain caused by prolonged standing or inadequate fluid or salt intake or excessive sweating due to heat. The easiest remedy for this syncope is to increase your fluid intake to atleast 2 liters per day and increase the amount of salt in the diet as well as to avoid caffeinated drinks.

Even then, there are other reasons for fainting which can be lifethreatening which have to be ruled out before its is declared as vasovagal syncope for which I will need to know the answers to the above questions, so I can guide you better.

I would suggest for her to be seen by her physician so she can be examined completely and if needed further tests be done.

Regarding Iron supplements, if her diet is deficient in iron or if she has a poor appetite, she needs to be have her hemoglobin checked to get properly treated with right dose of iron salts. Till then she can take any over the counter multivitamin with iron.

Hope this information has been useful to you.

Best wishes.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
