Fast And Erratic Heartbeats Treated With Medications, Three Ablations, Cardioversion. Can Sinus Rhythm Be Appropriate ?
I have a history of fast and erratic heartbeats treated via medication, three ablations procedures and cardioversion . Last night my resting rate went from 62 to 118 and visited my cardiologist . The ECG returned a report of sinus rhythm and he said that I could not have the requested cardioversion because this is not appropriate for a sinus rhythm . I am now left with a high and uncomfortable rate that I know my flecainide and concor medication will not tackle. QUESTION - should I be able to get a cardioversion when in sinus rhythm? Thank you
Respected sir/ madam Thanks for writing to us. 1. The aim of cardioversion is to revert an abnormal rhythm to sinus rhythm which is the default normal rhythm. Hence you can not cardiovert sinus rhythm to sinus rhythm. 2. The only such possibility is when you have "inappropriate sinus tachycardia" (IST) where ECG resembles that with sinus tachycardia but actually it is an abnormal rhythm. But IST itself is a rare rhythm disorder. 3. Whenever we have a fast sinus rhythm (sinus tachycardia)we always look for an inciting cause/ stimulating process. 4. I do not see any reason that concor will not be able to control sinus rate. Hope this provides some insight. Sincerely
