Fell And Fractured Ribs, Pain, Spasms Which Takes His Breath Away. Done X-ray. Taking Percocet
Hi: My husband fell and fractured a rib or ribs. He has been to a doctor & had x-rays to determine this. Although they were limited in their x-ray equipment he was diagnosed with at least one rib fractured and is now on Percocet or equivalent 2 tablets 3 times per day, however, he is extremely in pain and goes into spasms where it takes his breath away. This injury happened on Saturday and he has hardly moved from his easychair since. I am concerned about lack of movement, no appetite and spasm everytime he even speaks. Even when he is just lying there he has a spasm.
Hi, Fractured ribs can be very painful but can be successfully managed at home when only a few have been injured. Pain relief is vital and I suggest you add regular ibuprofen to your husband's regimen. Apply ice to the painful area. Hold a pillow against his chest to support his ribs when he coughs. Take 10 deep breaths every hour. Although this will be painful, it will reduce the chance of developing a chest infection. Avoid smoking as this may induce coughing. Healing may take up to 6 weeks. It is important to keep well hydrated and eat a healthy diet to encourage healing. I wish you a speedy recovery. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
