Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 79 yr old mother was in a car accident, she broke her back at mid section (wear a bra strap is), broke her right jaw, and has numerous broken and fractured ribs. She had surgery on her back involving hooks, screws and rods. She is not paralyzed, what recovery time and I roughly looking at for her?
You want to know how much time she will take to recover and get out of the bed. I can predict that she may take somewhere around 4-6 months to recover well also there shouldn't be any kind of infection she gets in this duration. Having a physiotherapist who can teach some simple breathing exercises and help her with active assisted ROM exercises which can help her to keep the joint freedom and also muscle will be in an active state. Because anyone lying in bed for a long time will have muscle weakness irrespective of the age. So bedside physiotherapy will definitely help her to regain all the ADLs.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
