Felt Fish Bone In Mouth While Eating. Developed Sore Mouth And Tongue. Have Painful Throat. What To Do?

About a week ago I was eating a bite of flounder and felt a fish bone in my mouth. I tried to remove it but could not find it. Since that time I have developed a sore mouth and tongue. I'm assuming that is from the fish bone injuring the mouth and tongue. During the last few days I have a painful area in my throat. Is it possible the bone could be lodged on one side of my throat. I cannot see it or feel it. Should I see my primary care physician or ENT specialist (which will probably take a week or two to get an appointment with either), or go to an urgent care clinic.

hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your concern regarding a piece of fish bone stuck in your throat.

It seems likely that the piece would have injured your throat while you were swallowing and that is why you are getting the sore feeling.
In most of the times the piece would have been swallowed but while swallowing it would have injured the throat and make you feel that something is still stuck there.
You may start a bland diet consisting of plenty of fluids and may be milk to reduce the irritation. You may also start an antibiotic like amox-clav after food for five days along with pantoprazole before food for two weeks in addition to any routine pain killer. Your general practitioner will know about these.

Avoid spicy, oily and hot food and also do not take alcohol at least for a week or so

If your symptoms persists then you may need to perform an upper GI endoscopy to be more clear and sure of your problem as rarely it is quite possible for the bone to be stuck within the tissue and not be seen externally.

take care and get well soon
