Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

There is no harm in taking x-ray during this time of pregnancy.

Pain in filled tooth can be due to re-infection or peri-apical infection.

Root canal treatment or pulpotomy has to be done in such cases.

Take analgesics-antibiotics complete course.

Maintain oral hygiene well.

Take care.

thank you for the query. The answer you observing below by an 'anonymous' is actually written by me before few days ago, before I was a member here in Healthcaremagic. I can again assure you that you can take one or two IOPA radiograph safely at this stage of pregnancy to reach to a correct diagnosis. But it is better to avoid any surgical procedure at this stage. Visit your dentist. He may prescribe a simple antibiotic like Amoxicillin and an analgesic like Paracetamol to relieve your pain for the time being. You can proceed for further treatment after your delivery. Best wishes..

Hi
As you are having pain in tooth which has been recently filled, consult your dentist so that he can start with RCT.
X-ray will pose no problem at this time .
Go for a proper treatment now so that you may not experience pain later.
Maintain oral hygiene as pregnancy is the stage in which women's mouth becomes vunerable to gum diseases also.
Take care

Dentist Dr. Anshumala Singh's  Response
Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

In this case ,that you have mentioned here,an x ray can be avoided and simply the previous filling should be removed.

A new dressing of temporary type can be given and left for four weeks. After that again, it can be reconsidered,if required.

Even if the tooth requires root canal, it can be prolonged for some more time.

please visit your dentist and discuss it.Also do not take many pain killers. In case you are suggested for any procedures please speak to your gynecologist too before making any choice.

Hope i have answered your query.

Thanks and take care.

There are two main reasons for pain immediately after a tooth filling. Firstly the caries was too deep to have a normal filling, I mean the tooth was a candidate for ROOT CANAL TREATMENT not normal filling and secondly the filling is high that you have difficulties in biting, feeling something is there over filled tooth. The first one , of course is the most common chance. In that case you have to remove your filling immediately and get your tooth pulp( nerve and other tissues inside tooth) removed. Otherwise there is a possibility to have severe infection in relation to that tooth and thereby a swelling in that area, which is not a welcome condition during pregnancy. AN IOPA RADIOGRAPH HAS TO BE TAKEN TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS. CONTRARY TO THE COMMON BELIEF A SINGLE OR COUPLE OF DENTAL IOPA RADIOGRAPH DOES NOT CAUSE ANY HARM TO DEVELOPING FETUS. (According to USA standard 500 merm X-ray/year is considered safe during pregnancy. A modern dental IOPA X-ray discharges only 2 to 3 merm and is highly targeted, that is does not scatter too much to reach to your abdomen area. Most of dentist does not aware of these facts). Hopefully you doc will take a radiograph to have a correct diagnosis and remove dental pulp if required. Thanks
