Giving Calpol For Fever, Still Not Reducing. Dr Suggested Ibugesic And Calpol Alternatively. Need Another Opinion
Hi Doctor
My baby girl is 1.8 year old. She is suffering from fever from two days. We used colpol for 2 days but did not reduce the fever. When we are administering the medicine, it reduces for some time and then comes back. Sometimes it did not reduce at all.
Now, we went to doctor. He suggested IBUGESIC 5 ml. Also he says we can give colpol and this alternatively also.
Wanted to take second opinion here. Grateful if you can give more info.

Your child seems having a Viral fever.
The fever usually will persist for 3 to 5 days.
If there is mild fever, calpol in prescribed dose is enough.
If there is a high grade fever, you can give ibugesic in prescribed dose.
If the fever is not coming down even after 48 hours, better to investigate her with CBP, CUE, malarial parasite to look for any infection after consulting your Pediatrician.
Give plenty of oral fluids.

Both Calpol (Paracetamol) and Ibugesic (ibuprofen) belong to the same group of drugs. These drugs are called analgesic, anti pyretic and anti inflammatory drugs. They reduce pain, fever and inflammation.
Paracetamol is given four times a day because its effect after a oral dose lasts only up to 5 hours. It has to be given strictly every 6 hours and not at random timings. Since the effect of Ibuprofen stays for 8 hours it is given three times a day. That is why your Doctor has asked you to alternate the drugs. Six hours after giving Paracetamol, Ibuprofen should be given and 8 hours later, the next dose of Paracetamol should be given. This will control the fever effectively.
Fever is only a symptom and the underlying cause should also be treated for a complete cure. Both these drugs are only symptomatic, ie., they only control the fever, they do not treat the cause. In case of viral fever it takes atleast 5 days for fever to subside.

Paracetamol and ibugesic are both antipyretics and are totally safe when taken in proper dosages.
Your doctor is right you can give both alternatively.
Monitor temperature every 4 to 6 hourly and give antipyretic when fever is above 100F.
Do tepid sponging if fever is above 102 F.
Give plenty of fluids in form of glucose water,fruit juices.vegetable soup ,coconut water and soft
bland diet so as to maintain nutrition and hydration.
In case fever persist get re evaluated by doctor to look for any focus of infection and treat accordingly.
