Good evening Dr this is Magnus, this is regarding my fiance, her name is Nelly. Last month on 24th of August she was diagnosed with heart failure and she was admitted into the hospital, doctors were trying to stabilise her heart by giving her heart medications and on 30th morning she went into cardiac arrest, the CPR lasted for 20 minutes and she was put in medically induced coma.
Doctors stopped the sedation after 2 days which is on 1st of September, she started opening her eyes with with the fantic eye movement and slowly moved to completely opening her eyes to touch and sometimes by herself. Due to no other available response the doctors expected brain damage due to cardiac arrest and CT scan of brain did show some insults to the brain (according to the neurologist), they confirm that it is hypoxic brain injury and have been telling us that her chances of waking up to consciousness is very very low.
21 days since the sedation stopped, she can open her eyes, turn her head and responds to sound and touch, she also grabs the hands but those actions are mostly involuntary. I do feel that sometimes she responds to the commands like blink your eyes but many time it doesn't. Her GSC is 7 with intubated and doctors are trying to wheene off the ventilation.
Since yesterday she is having seizures and they are giving her medications for that and they told us again that this bad news and she may never respond in her life , ever again
As it's a public hospital, doctors don't share with us her reports or scan for a 2nd opinion.
I just want to know about what are her chances of regaining consciousness back and how long is the window we have where we can look forward for some positive change.
Also how we can help or assist her in this journey.
