I was diagnosed of hypertension (initially 150/90) which has now come down to 120/70. I also have sleeplessness. I have been told to take Supermet regularly. For sleep problem I was first told to take Zolfresh. I had comfort with th drug. After 10 days the doctor told me to stop. When I told him I find sleeping easier with the drug, he has prescribed me now stalopam plus. How long can the drug be taken? Is it safe to take it regularly?
Stalopam (escitalopram) is an antidepressant medicine. Stalopam plus is antidepressant plus a benzodiazepine (clonazepam). Clonazepam helps in anxiety and also helps in sleep. Stalopam helps in sleep in some but not all patients. Your doctor may have diagnosed you as Depression. Usually, Stalopam can be taken safely for long periods. Remember it is not an SOS (take only as needed) medicine. You have to take it regularly. Stop it only after discussing with your doctor. Clonazepam can be habit forming to some extent. Therefore, in my practice, I avoid continuing it beyond a few months. You may discuss these issues with your doctor. I hope this answer is helpful.
