Had Aorta Valve Transplant, Prescribed Metoprolol Tartrate , Lower Blood Pressure, Dizziness, Light Headed.

56 year old male. Had Aorta valve transplant 4 years ago. cow varity. prescribed metoprolol tartrate 24mg 1/2 tablet twice a day. Run 3 times a week 3 to 7 miles at a time. Always monitor my heart rate and log each run. Stopped the metoprolol 2 weeks ago due to lower blood pressure and some dizzyness . Not as light headed when standing up quickly. (have not measured blood pressure yet. Feel fine running cept my times have sloowed a bit and my heart rate has elevated twenty to thirty bpm. Is this in my head that metoprolol tartrate makes me a better runner?

Dear patient,

This is a fantastic question! It is probably not in your head, it ma be a very real benefit of the medication. You see, metoprolol slows down your heart rate and allows for increased filling times and volumes in your ventricle, which maximizes effective ejected volume of blood; that is the way pro-athletes are able to have such great cardiac outputs; like Lance Armstrong, his resting pulse at the peak of his career was about 38!

Yours truly,
