Had ORIF Surgery To Left Fifth Metatarsal Base, On Non-weight Bearing Duration. Healing Time ?
I am a 60 year old female, active and recently had ORIF surgery to left fifth metatarsal, base, approx. 6 weeks ago today. I've been non-weight bearing for this duration. Following my surgery I was placed in a post-op shoe and a bone stimulator was also ordered by my doctor. Last week after my doctor visit, x-rays were ordered from what I was told there has been no change to my fifth metatarsal other then the fixation being in place. My question is how common is it to go NWB for an additional four weeks? My incision is approx. 2 to three inches is this also typical and can this incision slow down the heeling on the fifth metatarsal?
Generally, fractures in the lower limb takes around 10-12 weeks to heal or unite.
The length of the incision has got no bearing or impact on the underlying healing process of the bone.
As you are of post menopausal age group, the bony union tends to be a bit slower. So use of regular calcium supplements in mandatory till bony union is complete.
Hope this information is helpful. Good day
