Had A Pedicure. Have Red Dots All Over Ankles. No Itching. Skin Infection?

Dermatologist question.

Had a pedicure on Thursday. By Friday notice red dots solo and in clusters splatter like all over ankle areas. Is it a skin infection? Or just bruising?

No bumps, no itching. Just red dots.

This is for someone in the 70s, female and no such condition before. Also when he was brushing the skin area on Thursday it hurt quite a bit.

Hi,

It seems that you are having purpura.

The spots are petechae.

It is not infection, it is bruising caused by trauma to skin capillaries.

And the cause is trauma on senile skin.

You just do not worry.

The lesions may fade by themselves.

Still, you consult dermatologist.

Vitamin K, vitamin C and iron may be taken.

Local thrombophob oint. may be helpful.

I hope you got my answer.

Thanks.

Dermatologist Dr. Neera Kataria's  Response
Hi, thanks for posting your query.

These red spots seem to be a result of pedicure. You have mentioned that while brushing the skin during pedicure it hurt a bit which means that the pressure applied was more than what skin could tolerate.

This caused an insult to the underlying skin tissues or probably the superficial blood vessels leading to inflammatory changes or bruising.

Secondly at age of 70 skin becomes lax, thinner, blood vessels become fragile and the ability to sense touch, pressure, vibration, heat and cold may be reduced. Thus, skin is at higher risk for injury. Rubbing or pulling on the skin can cause skin tears. Fragile blood vessels are easily broken. Bruises, may form after even a minor injury.

To treat the same, she may apply a mild steroid cream twice a day for a week or so.
Avoid rubbing the area.

If this does not settle or worsens you may contact a dermatologist for examination and treatment.

Hope this helps.
