Had A Proximal Phalanx Fracture On The Thumb. Stiff Finger With Swelling After Removing The Cast. Have Pain. Recovery?
Hi, I had a proximal phalanx fracture on my left thumb. My left hand was put in cast for 45 days. Now its been removed though x-ray wasn't taken to see how it is healed. But doctor suggested me to start moving my finger. To bend my finger at the joints is very difficult due to stiffness and their is slight pain when I try to do it. And thumb is still slightly stolen. If any obstacles comes in contact with my thumb it hurts a lot. I have couple of doubts has the fracture healed completely by now or its still on healing process? How to get rid of swelling and bend my thumb like I could it before?
Hey. Thanks for writing at HCM. When fracture of a phalanx occurs it needs to be immobilized in a cast. The best way of recovering proper movements is through mobilization. Move your thumb and the joint above and below the fractured site slowly but steadily. You will experience some pain but don't stop mobilizing your thumb. The fracture most likely has healed by now and your movements or slight hits on it by obstacles won't effect the healing process. The swelling would go on its own. Hope this helps you. Take care.
