Had A Root Canal. History Of Intense Reconstructive Surgery. Failed To Get Root. Permanently Filled. Now Gland Swollen. Suggestions?
I had a root canal on Friday. I have an old injury to my left tmj joint which required an intense reconstructive surgery about 15 years ago. Any prolonged dental work where my jaw has to be forced to stay open usually causes the tmj and my ligaments around my jaw to swell. Because of my condition my endontist was not able to successful get all the root in one of my canals after trying for two hours. He decided to permantly fill the tooth. He gave me 600 mg of ibuprofen and 7.5 by 325 of Vicodin and told me to Alternate them for the inflammation and pain from the procedure and the trauma of the procedure to my ligaments. The pain in my jaw and ligament are less sensitive, but now my gland under my jaw is swollen and is very painful. When I take the dose of 600mg of ibuprofen the pain remains the same or worsens in my gland its hard to swallow. When I take the dose of Vicodin the pain in my gland is much less. I called them today and they started me on pencillin incase some how the procedure caused an infection. I'm starting to wonder if the ibuprofen is the reason my gland is reacting in the first place. Could it cause the gland to react?
Pain & swollen glands or lymph nodes here indicates infection associated with the teeth & it's most probably the one you had root canal done in.
Ibuprofen drug is not known to cause any such reaction in patients but should be avoided in asthamatic people.
Visit your dentist as soon as possible before swelling progresses further.
Use of antibiotics is very crucial in such case. Sometimes if this could not suffice then Repeat root canal has to be done after giving proper time for drainage from the same tooth.
As you are getting difficulty in swallowing means the infection is slightly more severe & requires immediate antibiotic coverage.
hello swollen gland under your jaw may be due to some kind of infection and in this case opiod analgesics are more effective than NSAIDS. thats why vicodin is more effective than ibuprofen. you should continue with your antibiotics along with analgesics. get well soon
hi... thanks for the query... i don't think, ibuprofen is the reason for your gland to react... i think you should wait and watch for the symptoms after 2-3 doses of antibiotics... because mild to moderate pain is sometimes normal after endodontic procedures... if the pain persists, it might be the infection... and you should consult your endodontist for the same... take care...
Hi Thanks for the query As your tooth has undergone a compromised root canal treatment so reoccurence of infection is normal. Pain and swelling are due to that left canal in your tooth. As per my opinion, a tooth in which a canal is not debrided due to any reason, should not be permanently filled. Consult your dentist for the symptoms and follow your prescription. Maintain good oral hygiene. Take care
