A keloid is type of scar which, is composed mainly of collagen. It is a result of an overgrowth of granulation tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloids are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules. A keloid scar is benign but sometimes it can cause itching and pain. First-line options include silicone sheeting, pressure treatment, and corticosteroid injections. Cryotherapy is useful for smaller lesions. Surgical removal of keloids is most often followed by aggressive regrowth of scar tissue. Therefore, all surgical options should be followed by corticosteroid injections, silicone sheeting, Other therapies with limited studies include intralesional verapamil, fluorouracil, bleomycin, and interferon alfa-2b injections, although results are not very encouraging.
