Had Hypothyroid Operation For Being Unable To Take Calcium, Burning Sensation Below Knees. Reason ?
Hello Doctor, My mother had undergone hypothyroid opperation before 11 years. After the operation it was found that her body was not able to make calcium. She was taking adequate amount of calcium daily now it is found that she is having a burning sensation below her knees and even she is suffering from pain in her body. Can u tell me why is this happening though she is taking regular calcium tablets in adequate form. Or might be her sodium and other substances are effected.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Jay Patel's Response
Hi,
Their are parathyroid gland which are located close to the thyroid glands, which performs the important function of maintaining the balance of calcium in the blood now while operating for the thyroid gland they may have removed parathyroid glands, hence you will need the calcium. Now the burning sensation are due to problem in nerves, mostly its associated to sodium issues but specific test needs to be done to identify the specific causes.
Its may also be associated with prolonged diabetes.
Please have it checked with near by physician. Thanks. Dr.JAY PATEL.
