Had Knee Replacement. Cancelled Surgery Today Because Of Shortness Of Breath. Worried About Amputation. What Can Be The Probable Outcome?
Hello,my father was admitted today. He had a schudled knee removal, today .Last Oct. he had a replacement with many other complications he now has staf in the knee. The Dr. cancelled the surgery today because he was so short of breath....he says he may have a pulmuary occlusion .how very serious is this should I fly home,I am worried about amputation. Please what is the probable outcome of these ploblems?
Hello. To perform a surgical intervention is necessary that the patient's condition is correct :no fever, normal heart rate, normal blood pressure.... Pulmonary occlusion is contraindication for any type of surgical intervention. It is important that the doctor explain you that means "pulmonary occlusion." If "occlusion" is by bronchial infection, probably your father will improve in a few days and surgical intervention can be done. If "occlusion" is by thrombosis, the pathology is much more important and there is reason to be concerned. I wish your father good health. (if the answer has helped you, please indicate this)
Hi, The surgeon will only proceed with the surgery on your father when his health is optimised. This will improve the outcome of surgery. Therefore, he will need his breathing problem investigated and treated. It would be impossible to comment on the exact problem that your father has which has delayed his surgery. The probable outcome is that the relevant doctors in the hospital will treat and improve his breathing to allow him to go ahead with his knee surgery. I would suggest you contact the surgeon to discuss the current problems that have delayed surgery. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
