Has Diarrhea. Prescribed Immodium And BRAT Diet. Has Watery Bowel Movement Over 2 Weeks. Reason?
My 84 yr old dad who is normally healthy started having diarhria 2 weeks ago, I took him to an urgent care this morning and they did blood work to see if he has any infection going on but that was all. we suspected diverticulitus as he has had in in the past. Doc said no he didn't have the symptoms as he was not throwing up, feverish or b nauseated. sent him home on the BRAT diet and Immodium. He has had water like bowel movements that eject with force for over two weeks....what can I do for him?
Just wish to know if a stool exams was done equally as that is the direct tests to rule out all possible infections. BRAT diet and immodium are only to treat the symptom but can not cure the cause of the diarrhea. If there is an infection, then that needs to be eradicated. You will need to start him immediately on oral rehydration therapy (ORT) to prevent dehydration and electrolyte disorder which could become fatal if the diarrhea continuous. You may continue the doctor's prescription together with ORT for say 2-3 days and if the diarrhea continues please take him immediately to his doctor. He might even require hospitalization if his general state becomes altered.
hope this helps
