Is The Stool Hard Normal After Appendectomy ?

Hi, I recently had an appendectomy ( 11 days ago), and I am recovering well. However, when my surgeon told I could eat solid foods again, I had diarrhea (watery stool) twice. Should I be worried? I am on BRAT diet from last two days and doing fine. Thanks

Hi,

Noted the history of appendectomy 11 days ago with nice recovery, advised by your Doctor for BRAT diet and development of watery diarrhea twice.
The commonest cause of such diarrhea can be as follows:
Disturbed balance of normal bacterial flora in intestinal tract.
Antibiotics can cause such a problem.
Intestinal infection should be ruled out.
Intolerance to one of the ingredients in BRAT diet.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Send the stool for test as well as the blood sample for WBC.
Take probiotics.
Stop Brat diet and go for the usual things you used to eat before surgery, try nothing new.
All these will help to get a cure.
If the stool test shows infection it can be treated accordingly with prescription based medications.
Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation and examination, advise investigations and have prescription based management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
