Have Mirena Inserted. Stomach Pain, Back Pain, Frequent Urination, Nausea, Abnormal Periods. Taken Cimetidine. What Is Wrong?

Hello, my name is Josie. I had the mirena inserted probably 5 months ago. I am having stomach pain/cramps, side pain, a shooting pain where I would normally get cramps, back pain, frequent urination, and nausea. My last period was maybe 2 weeks ago and lasted less than a day which is very unusual. I went to the emergency room because I thought i was going to urinate myself and they did a test...They found no infection or sign of pregnancy. I then went to my Dr. who performed the same tests and said the same thing. He prescribed me cimetidine 800mg for my stomach pain/nausea. I have also gained about 8 pounds since my last Dr. visit but they said nothing. My stomach looks bigger. The past couple of days I haven't wanted to eat. What is wrong with me?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this frequent urination. Beside an infection that is the most common cause of frequent urination, other possible causes like pelvic masses should be considered. The bladder elicits the urination reflex each time it is full. if for any reason the size of the bladder is reduced by a mass sitting next to it like fibroid, cyst, hardened feces, etc, it would get full many times and send you to the rest room as often also.

Because you have mentioned abdominal pain, your tummy becoming bigger than usual and and weight gain, please consider having an abdominal ultrasound at least to exclude any possible mass.

Mirena may not be directly implicated here> i strongly think it is most likely due to local compression given the consistent negative urine findings.
Thanks.

Hello ma'am.

I would advise a hormone level check with the help of a blood sample. Also, cimetidine is effective but comes with various side effects and can even cause weight gain and a hormonal imbalance.

It would be best to susbtitute this with another medication. Pain is also an indication for the removal or a contraceptive implant.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
