The pain can occur in deeper areas as the inflammation of the injury to the tissue spreads to the surrounding tissue

Just see if there is reddened area in and around the belly button
Also look for some discharge of foul smell from the same

If any of these signs are present see your doctor

Such symptoms are most likely caused by umbilical hernia. There should be present a lump in the belly button however it can be only visible when coughing, lifting or pushing on abdomen.
Through the little hole in the umbilicus the abdominal cavity parts (usually the omentum) gets out and causes pain. If the intestine wall will get through this hole, it can cause an obstruction.
That is why I suggest you to visit your doctor and have it verified. Physical examination of painful area should be done. In case of doubts abdominal ultrasound should be also performed.

Food poisoning can cause belly button pain when you eat contaminated food, usually resulting in some sort of bacteria invading your body. The vast majority of food poisoning cases are of this type, and it occurs a lot more often than it is diagnosed. If you think you have food poisoning, which can cause a lot of different symptoms in addition to belly button pain such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc

If you are not suffering from food poison then I advice you to do an Ultrasound abdomen to rule out appendicular inflammation which can be at starting stage.

Hi ! Your symptoms what you have described matches exactly with the book description of symptoms of Acute appendicitis. Here, the pain starts in the para umbilical region with gradual localisation to the right lower side of abdomen, which hurts on any movement causing abmoninal wall to get disturbed causing the inflammed parietal peritoneum to transmit pain sensation to the brain. Even a cough can give rise to this pain. Your treating doctor may go for some routine investigations like urine and blood tests and an ultrasound abdomen and suggest to consult a general surgeon. If it comes out to be a appendicitis on clinical examination and related investigations, this needs to be operated on immediately. This is a very common operation performed in minimally invasive ways and you do not have to get upset for it.
Although other few conditions like urinaty tract infection, collitis etc, may come into picture, apart from pelvic infection in case of female patient, in the present situation, acute appendicitis seems to be the most probable diagnosis.
