Have Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism. Given Heparin. Having A Endometrial Ablation With General Anaesthetic. Help
I am a 33yo female with history of one episode of bilateral Pulmonary Embolism 3 years ago. As a precaution I am given Heparin prior to long haul flights & before and after surgery due to being high risk . I am due to have a day case surgery ( endometrial ablation with General Anaesthetic ) and wondered, do I need Heparin injections with just a day case surgery? Many thanks
With the history of pulmonary embolism, the chances for its recurrence are more especially if you have to undergo surgery- a major or a minor.
Since, you have had endometrial ablation under general anaesthesia, chances of embolism (especially deep vein thrombosis, DVT) are more.
DVT can lead to pulmonary embolism.
Thus, you need heparin injection with the day care surgery.
Surgeries under general anesthesia need heparin in patients who have an history of embolism in the past.
Thanks and take care
