Have Canker Sore, Used Hydrogen Peroxide. Should I Use Cotton To Buffet Between Sore And Teeth?

I developed a canker sore on Sunday and it s been bothering me ever since. I ve come to the conclusion that it s been caused by my left canine tooth as it perfectly rests ontop of the sore when my mouth is closed. I ve been using a lot of Hydrogen Peroxide and Salt Water mouth wash to cleanse it but i m more concerned with its constant brushing against my canine and other teeth . Should I be using cotton to act as a buffet between it and my teeth? I ve been trying as much but it seems to soak up a lot of my saliva rather quickly. I also heard I shouldn t keep it dry because salvia helps too? At any rate i d appreciate as much advice as possible. Eating and brushing my teeth have become chores this week.

salt water with luke warm water is advisable , but stop the hydrogen peroxide mouthwash. take vitamin b 12 tablets. rinse with benadryl. go to a dentist and get your sharp tooth rounded so that it does not traumatise the mucosa.
yes do not keep it dry as the saliva is known to have antibiotic properties.

Hello and thank you for your question.
The Hydrogen peroxide and salt water are great to use for traumatic ulcers and aphthous ulcers. The hydrogen peroxide helps introduce oxygen into the wound and gently removes any debris that may be entrapped causing increased inflammation. The salt water, due to osmosis pulls excess fluid from the wound site, shrinking the cells and removing some of the pain associated with inflammation. If the tooth is sharp it should be smoothed out by a dentist in his/her office. If it's due to biting trauma, then give it 1-2 weeks to heal and it should go away. The tenderness should disappear about 5-7 days after formation. I would not use the cotton as a buffer because it may actually irritate the site even more. You can take ibuprofen to help with the pain, stay away from spicy foods and alcohol.

Best Wishes and Good Health

You could use an anesthetic ointment, mucopain ointment, or you can crush a tetracycline powder and press it on the affected
site , so that it will resolve fast. Find out it is because of the sharp tooth and can do selective trimming

Hello and welcome,
Here in you case canker sore is definitely developed by chronic irritation caused by canine tooth which is touching the mucosa after closing the mouth.

This usually happens if the patient is having deep bite, or if that particular tooth is being extruded slightly out of the socket due to any underlying periodontal condition.

Stop using hydrogen peroxide as it is not necessary here. First and very crucial part here is to get that impinging canine tooth grind-ed to safe level so that it doesn't touch the oral mucosa or that ulcer after closing the mouth.

For this, visit your dentist as soon as possible & get that canine rounded off the level because if this is not done, then even after proper drugs or care has been taken, canine will interfere with the healing of the ulcer or that canker sore.

Use of topical anesthetic gel or ointment will provide relief at least for short period. Use of antibiotics should be typically avoided in such ulcers unless secondarily infected.

Take care.

hi , if your canine is causing impingement on any area it needs to be ground a bit so that it will not hurt in future. As for the canker sore use a pain releiving gel like mucopain over it thrice daily, dont use hydrogen peroxide as it can cause irritation use normal warm saline water instead. You can also use a liquid painkiller like ibugesic that will also surely help in releiving pain.

take care

hello and welcome,
area around your canine tooth has ulcerated.
it has to be treated by giving dressings with zinc oxide eugenol and iodoform paste.
hydrogen peroxide and salt water rinses also help as they have oxidating and syneresis action respectively.
visit your dentist and get sharp edges of tooth rounded off if any.
also check your path of occlusion and traumatic bite and get corrected by your dentist if any.
avoid intake of hot and spicy food.
please do not place cotton over the sore area as it can irritate the tissue surrounding.
take vitamin becosules and corticosteroid as per your dentist's advice.
use soft bristled toothbrush and avoid vigorous brushing techniques.

Hi,
Sometimes due to sharp teeth, sores/ulcers develop in the mouth which are painful. Ideally you need to visit a dentist who will just round off the sharp edges of the concerned teeth so that they dont brush against the area. For the healing and relief of pain till your visit you need to apply any local anesthetic ointment 3-4times/day. putting unsterilized cotton may not help and is avoidable. If the pain is sever a mild pain killer is recommended. The hydrogen peroxide should be stopped as it can further increase your problem, rather a betadine mouthwash will work better.
