Have Chronic Coccyx Pain. Will It Eventually Go Away?

Hello Dr. Grief, I have had Chronic coccyx pain for a couple of years now. It came on suddenly, I hadn't fallen recently when the pain came on. It felt like it was gradually going away when I did fall and hit my tailbone. It seem like now the pain will never go away. It pain is mild and doesn't bother me all that much but I wonder if it will eventually go away? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

In order to lessen the pain arising out of the coccyx, please follow these measures

* Sit completely upright with proper posture — keeping your back firmly against the chair, knees level with your hips, feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed

* Sitz baths (which involves soaking hips and buttocks)

* Lean forward while sitting down

* Sit on a doughnut-shaped pillow or wedge (V-shaped) cushion

* Apply heat or ice to the affected area

*Physical therapy involving strengthening of pelvic area muscles , stimulation with ultrasound therapy

* Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil)

Majority of the patients will get significant relief with the above measures. If you dont find any relief, then local steroid injections may help in alleviating your pain.

In intractable cases of pain and as a last resort, coccygectomy is indicated.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
