A normal menstrual cycle varies in duration and amount of flow. It can be as short as 20 days and as long as 35 days. There is nothing abnormal in getting periods with slight variation. The onset of menstrual cycles is usually preceded by pre-menstrual symptoms. This is characterized by bloating, lower back ache, and mild to moderate cramping sensation in the lower abdomen. If the symptoms are very troublesome, you can take anti-spasmodics. It is difficult to pin point the date when the periods will appear. However, pre-menstrual symptoms just precede the menstrual cycle acting as a rough guide.
