When Can I Start Using Oral Contraceptive After Stopping Injectable Contraceptive?
Hi Doctors! I'm Shane Salas, 24 years old from the Philippines. I've been using injectable contraceptive for 1 year & 9 months now. I want to switch using contraceptive pill, ALTHEA PILLS available here in our country. My next injection should be on June 8. WHEN WILL I START USING ALTHEA PILLS? IT SAYS ON THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT I SHOULD TAKE IT THE 21 PILLS FOR 21 DAYS.THEN AFTER, 7 DAYS FREE PILLS. THEN I WILL START A NEW PACK ON THE 8TH DAY. IS IT TRUE THAT IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME BEFORE I WILL HAVE MY MENSTRUATION? WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE MY MENSTRUATION WITHIN THE 7 DAYS FREE PILLS? PLEASE ANSWER. THANK YOU.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
As injectable contraceptive can be delayed by 4 weeks after its previous dose, when injectable contraceptive is stopped. It's effect will continue for 4 weeks so new oral contraceptive can be started after 3 weeks of discontinuing injectable.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
