Before answering your query I would like to know your menstrual history.
How long have your periods been heavy?
If this has started some time back then you need to get some investigations done.
You need to get an endometrial biopsy or endometrial curreting done. This will sample the lining of the uterus and find out the changes in the uterine lining/ endometrium.
Heavy bleeding can be due to hyperplasia or even malignancy.
Regarding the effect of progesterone, it is given to regularize the periods. However, it is necessary to know the cause.
Menopause is the stoppage of menstruation. The age for menopause varies. It is not same for all women.
There is a wide age variation. Some may get as early as 45 years and some may get it above 50 years of age.
But this is not the solution. This is because having such heavy periods at your age is worrisome due to risk of cancers.
So you need to get an endometrial biospy to rule out the possibility of cancerous changes in the uterine lining causing heavy periods.
Also an ultrasound prior to biopsy is a must.
If the biopsy report is normal or shows simple endometrial hyperplasia then ther is nothing to worry and you can continue with regesterone tablets.
When you are approaching menopause the periods do get irregular bu they are lighter.
If you present with heavy bleeding during this period, it needs complete evaluation.
A Pap smear is also needed if you have not been tested for the same.
take care.
