Have Insomnia, Taking Temazepam, Doctor Took Me Off The Medication Without An Alternative. What To Do?

I have insomnia and have had it for years. I have been taking temazapam 30 mg with good results for years until my new Primary Care Doctor took me off the medication without an alternative. I have tried over the counter sleep-aids without success. Do your have any suggestions. Sleep deprivation is terrible and obtaining sleep has become an on-going quest.

Hi,

It appears that you are experiencing benzodiazepine withdrawal caused by abrupt stopping of temazepam, which your body had become used to. Since over the counter sleep medicines have not helped, I feel you should contact your doctor and request him to prescribe medicines for sleep which do not have a major risk of dependence. Zolpidem or trazodone may be tried. Though you won't find these to be as effective as benzodiazepines, but these will at least help you to tide over till your body recovers. Please also practice sleep hygiene techniques like avoiding daytime naps, avoiding stimulants like coffee near bedtime, keeping at least a two hour gap between the last meal and bedtime, regular exercise etc.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
