Have Irregular Period, Have Gestational Sac, No Fetus Or Yolk Sac. Taking Birth Control Pills. What Does This Mean?

The first day of my last period was 8/5/13 so I should be 7.5 weeks along. I am 28 and had been taking birth control pills from age 15-28. I started because of an irregular menstrual cycle. I stopped taking the birth control in July, had one menstrual cycle, and was pregnant before the second one came up. For my last cycle I was 1.5 weeks late.

I went to my ob/gyn this week and they showed a sonogram with a gestational sac but no fetus or yolk sac within it. The doctor said he was worried that he was not seeing more and that it could possibly be a sign of miscarriage. He wants to see me in 2 weeks. Any chance of me being 5 weeks or so along developmentally because of my irregular periods...or should I have seen development of a 7.5 week fetus?

There is definitely a chance that it was a delayed conception because your last cycle was around 1. 5 weeks late.
At 8 weeks, a fully formed fetus with a heartbeat should have been seen.
ALso, just to give you the benefit of the doubt, please have a repeat scan after a week.
If no further fetal development is seen then , it is most definitely a missed miscarriage.
That would require termination.
Take medications as prescribed, take adequate rest , avoid stress and intercourse.
