Have Large Lymph Node Behind The Ear For Which Surgery In Advised
I have an enlarged lymph node behind my left ear. I noticed it about 4-5 months ago after I had an allergic reaction to hair dye( my scalp still itches in places/feels lumpy in places in back left of scalp) Finally went to my Dr about 1 month ago. He put me on Levaquin for 2 weeks. Node got smaller; now about the size of marble. I developed a very itchy (with some bruising), spreading rash 1/2way through Levaquin course. Referred to ENT DR. He recommends surgical removal of node as I have also been experiencing extreme fatigue and night sweats (which I attribute to peri menopause). He prescribed methylprednisolone for the itching. Within 1 day of taking it, the lymph node has reduced in size some. Question: Are there any other tests that I can request, prior to surgical removal of the node, to try and rule out lymphoma? I've never had a surgical procedure. Shouldn't I try to preserve my lymph node if it's just in there doing it's job? Maybe I have some other type of infection going on other than lymphoma? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi and thank you so much for trusting us with your health query.
I am so sorry to hear about this swollen lymph node. Considering all the information you have provided, I strongly think this lymph node probably resulted from the infectious/inflammatory processes you had with your scalp. This is the most likely reason for it to have reduced in size on levaquin. I will not be recommending that e removes the lymph node without reasons why. If it is for ore investigation, then that is acceptable. However, if it is just to get rid of it, I would beg to disagree.
