Have Signs Of Menopause. Missed Period And Pain In Breast. Should I Do A Mammo?

Hi,
I am experiencing signs of menapause. I am 51 and missed my period last month for the first time. I am now experiencing pain in my left breast and i feel a lump for a few days now. I feel like I am going to get my period, but it has been 35 days since my last period. I am thinking I should see my OBGYN or go straight for a mammo. I had a mammo about 5 months ago and it came back fine. Any advice?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Better to consult gynecologist once, get examined and then go for investigations.
Irregularity in periods can be due to hormonal fluctuation in perimenopausal state.
But breast lump should be thoroughly investigated.
If your doctor suggest you may need to for FNAC to find out the actual nature of the lump.
After the investigations you can choose the treatment option.

Thanks for posting your query.

As you approach menopause, missing your period is quite common.
Even though its extremely rare, pregnancy has to be ruled out if there is a possibility.

Breast pain is not of much concern as is the lump.
Breast pain may be just a hormonal change.

Its reassuring to know that mammo done 5 months ago is normal.
First make an appointment with your gynecologist who will advise you on further treatment.

Do not expose your self to unnecesary radiation before that.

The best time to have a breast examination is after a period when all the hormonal changes in the breast are minimal.

But do not wait for your periods before seeing your gynecologist.

Hope this has helped.
All the best,take care.
