Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Sudhir's Response
Hello. Thanks for the question.A well distended gall bladder is normal thing.Gall bladder gets distended when it gets filled with bile and emptied when bile is used up.Only other cause is obstruction of bile duct can cause distended gall bladder, but in that case sonography would have shown distended bile duct as well.I think ideal investigation in your case would be gastroscopy and if needed barium swallow. The type of pain which you have described seems more of related to esophagus and hernia than gall bladder.Thank you.
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
I think that the pain that you are experiencing is due to GERD, hiatus hernia and probably peptic ulcer disease. The way ahead would be to do an endoscopy and rule out a peptic or duodenal ulcer. You can also try taking Tablet Prevacid OTC one tablet daily one hour before meals if you are not receiving a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole or lansoprazole. I would also be interested in doing an ECG to rule out any heart condition that we are missing.
I dont think the right quadrant pain is due to gallstones as the ultrasound would have showed up the stones.
also, avoid caffeine, alcohol, spicy food and smoking. pain killers like aspirin can worsen your situation so be wary when you take them.
Regards
