Having Irregular Periods. Having Pregnancy Symptoms And Also Spotting. Suggest

I have very long irregular periods at times. A few days ago I went into the hospital because I was very late for my period and having alot of pregnancy symptoms. I know when I ovulated and we did have intercourse on that day. The midwife went ahead and had a blood sample taken and while I was in the office she went ahead and did an ultrasound. We saw a gestational sac on the monitor but because I was spotting she was concerned that I am miscarrying, even though the sac looked good. She called back 2 hours later and told me there is no possible way that I could be pregnant because my HcG levels are below 1. She scheduled a follow up ultrasound in 2 weeks to see if the sac progresses or not. If it is NOT pregnancy, what is the sac? I have done extensive research and nothing else I have seen that can grow in uterus looks like a gestational sac at 4 weeks.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

If a gestational sac was seen and there bHCG levels are below 1, then this could very much be suggestive of a missed abortion. In this case, the product of conception stops growing but stays in the uterus. Because HCG is produced by the growing embryo/fetus, the levels will decrease progresively and soon become undetectable. This is most likely what has happened.

Well, be patient..In 2weeks you will have a follow up ultrasound and all will be fine. If it is confirmed, then you will get a uterine evacuation procedure to take care of it.

Hope this helps and provides enough guidance.
I wish you the best of outcome with this.
