Having Pain And Tenderness, Fluid Discharge Around The Incision Area, And Joint Pain. Had A Pacemaker. Is My Body Rejecting The Device?
I am a 60 year old woman who had a pacemaker put in a few months ago and am experiencing pain and tenderness around the incision area as well as pretty bad joint pain .my bp has been very low ( I take no bp meds )there was also a problem with stitches coming to the surface and fluid oozing from the wound. the doc removes the bothersome stitches but the wound still seems to be struggling to heal...the joint pain is the worst and the area around the incision is the most painful...is my body trying to reject the device?
Dear ma'm
Thanks for writing to us.
Normally Rejection of such devices by the body is not a problem. Rejection is usually restricted to living implants which can incite the immune system of body like a renal transplant or a liver transplant. The more problematic and serious thing associated with pacemakers is infection in the pacemaker pocket, which has serious consequences. i would like you to see your cardiologist and seek his opinion on this issue on priority. The pain in near by joint can be because of the inflammation in the pocket itself or it could be the result of long time immobility. This issue again requires examination.
since the possibility of infection can not be ruled out without examination , you must see the cardiologist.
good luck
sincerely
