Having Schizophrenia, Difficulty In Communication. Remedy?
My son is diagnosed as having schizophrenia. Not full blown. His step father suggested maybe he has mild retardation because of his thought process and how his words and sentences come out. He was an A, B student until this triggered when he was 16 and a half. Could he be mildly retarded or maybe the medicine or is it just the illness causing his thought process not to be so clear. He didn't communicate hardly at all for almost four years, and now that he is, his sentences and words don't always make sense for what he's trying to say. Im his mom and I find myself having to tell him things to say when he's making a phone call or help him fill out paperwork.

He is having schizophrenia. Withdrawn and poor communication is key symptoms of negative symptoms schizophrenia.
Mental Retardation usually reflects by 4th standard maximum. in addition, there are history of delayed mile stones development.
You should continue to take medicine as well as psychotherapy as suggested by Psychiatrist. please continue taking drugs until advised to stop it by psychiatrist.

There can be deterioration in communication skills and social skills as a part of schizophrenia. However get a psychological assessment also done. Retardation is unlikely to develop at this age. Medication for schizophrenia will help to some extent in improving the negative symptoms (i.e poor communication, social withdrawl etc). However, supportive psychotherapy and skill training will give added benefits.

greetings friend,schizophrenia and mental illness and mental retardation are very complex problems and often take extensive psychological testing to get the appropriate diagnosis. Sometimes these things are found in combination and need time and extensive interviewing to get to the right diagnosis of the proper treatment can be remedied. I would recommend starting first with the primary care doctor like an internal medicine or family doctor and if you do not have access to this I would recommend a psychiatrist if available. He may have attention deficit disorder as well or bipolar, which also should be considered. Cheers.
