Having Sore And Painful Tailbone And Rectal Bleeding. What Could This Be?

Hi,
I am a 47 year old female. At age 24 I had an anal fissure that was treated on an out-patient basis with no complications. After giving birth to three children over a 12 year period, I had an emergency hemmoroidectomy due to excessive bleeding and the Dr. said I had divorticulosis, which he said was common due to my age. In the past month, I have been experiencing increased pain in my tailbone and rectal bleeding started two weeks ago. Mostly when I have a bowel movement, but sometimes I bleed even if I'm not passing a stool or going to the bathroom. My PCP did an exam today and I am seeing a GI specialist tomorrow. My tailbone is very sore and the pain radiates up and down my rectum. What should I expect? Thank you!

Hi there ~

I understand your concerns. I believe that having sore and painful tailbone and rectal bleeding is related to a lower GI condition that needs to be taken care of. I wonder if you have been seen by a GI doctor that has experience with these issues. I also believe that you might need surgery if you are having recurrence of the anal fissure, or the diverticulosis. I wish you all the very best for the GI appointment. I do not expect that you will be given any serious prognosis.

I hope this helped and I wish you the very best. Take care!
